KRS-ONE - BY ALL MEANS: This piece pretty much speaks for itself, especially for HipHop aficionados who were listening to the music during the late ‘80s and early ‘90s when there was an overt level of consciousness and Black cultural awareness running throughout the music. While the cover of the Boogie Down Productions’ album By All Means Necessary is based on the famous photo of Malcolm X peering out of the window, I wanted to juxtapose these two images to help insure that future viewers of this piece acknowledge or rediscover the historical, social, and political significance of HipHop culture within the greater context of not only Black history but American history. History, militancy, culture and art combined — this is HipHop.
